Resources to help families understand IEPs, 504 Plans, meetings, evaluations, and related supports.
Understanding an IEP:
An individualized Education Program, or IEP, is a written plan developed for a student who is eligible for special education services. It outlines the student's current needs, goals, supports, accommodations, and services.
Helpful for: Families who want to better understand the parts of an IEP and how the plan supports their child at school.
Understanding a 504 Plan:
A Section 504 Plan provides accommodations and supports for eligible students whose disability affects access to learning or school activities. A 504 Plan is different from an IEP and does not provide specially designed instruction in the same way.
Helpful for: Families who want to understand what a 504 Plan is, how it differs from an IEP, and what types of supports may be included.
Preparing for Meetings:
PPT, IEP, and 504 meetings can involve a lot of information. Preparing questions, reviewing current documents, and identifying your priorities ahead of time can help families participate more confidently in the conversation.
Helpful for: Parents preparing for an upcoming meeting with their child’s educational team.
Evaluations & Reevaluations:
Evaluations help a school team better understand a student’s strengths, learning needs, and whether the student may be eligible for services or supports. Reevaluations are used to review a student’s needs over time and determine whether current services remain appropriate.
Helpful for: Families who want to understand the evaluation process, testing, eligibility, or reevaluation
Progress Monitoring:
Progress monitoring helps families and school teams understand how a student is progressing toward identified goals and whether supports or services are helping. Reviewing progress over time can also help guide future conversations and decisions.
Helpful for: Families who want to better understand progress reports, IEP goals, and how student progress is reviewed.
Parent Rights & Procedural Information
Families have important rights and protections throughout the special education and Section 504 process. Official state and district resources can help parents understand notices, consent, records, dispute-resolution options, and other procedural safeguards.
Helpful for: Families looking for official information about their rights and responsibilities.
These resources are intended to help families understand common terms and processes. For questions about an individual student, families should contact their child’s school or educational team.
